Alecrast

Alecrast is the largest continent on Forcelia, about twelve thousand kilometers from coast to coast (about the size of Asia). The people of Lodoss know little about Alecrast, but merchants and traders from Raiden often do business with the seaports along the southern island chain, and a few even with the mainland itself.

As legend goes, at the end of the War of the gods, the final epic battle between Marfa and Kardis was fought on the southern peninsula of Alecrast. To protect Alecrast from destruction, Marfa separated the lands and moved the cursed peninsula southwards as their battles raged on, causing cataclysmic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on both lands. Even today, Fire Dragon Mountain stands as a reminder of this earth shattering event, and the Great Straight Cliff on the western side of Lodoss is clear proof that Lodoss was once attached to that now far away continent. The island chain south of Alecrast also stands as a testament to these climatic events of long ago.

Today, Alecrast shares a great deal of Lodoss's culture, language, and religious beliefs. The history of Alecrast was much the same as Lodoss until the collapse of the ancient kingdom of Kastuul. After that, two powerful empires arose on the continent: Sardain in the east and Boer in the west. Both eventually collapsed, giving birth to the many kingdoms that exist there today.

The closest Alecrastian island to Lodoss is just six hundred kilometers due north. The Alecrastian mainland, however, is nearly twenty four hundred kilometers north, and few make this incredible journey. Trade with Alecrast takes place through the island speckled archipelagos between Alecrast and Lodoss. Travelers wishing to visit Alecrast can find their way to the mainland by island hopping through the archipelagos until they reach the thin southwestern peninsula of Alecrast.

The most unique race of Alecrast are the grassrunners. Grassrunners have a large population across Alecrast, rivaling the human population, but they usually keep themselves within their grasslands, like elves. Alecrast also has a few small pocket populations of elves and dwarves, as well as goblins, dragons, and other monsters.

Nations

Note: Information on Alecrast gleaned from Rune Soldier. There are no dates in the anime, so I am assuming it takes place around the same time period as Lodoss adventures.)

Ohfun
Capitol: Ohfun
Sovereign: King Rijarl and Queen Meledi
Location: Unavailable

This nation is only twenty years old, found after a revolt against an older nation called Fahn. The revolt was led by Rijarl and a party of heroes which included a Myrii priestess named Jenny, and a mage named Carwess. When the war was won, Rijarl claimed the throne. The change in power left many bitter disenfranchised nobles, though some would find places in Rijarl's administration. Rijarl married Meledi, a princess of another nation, then bore a son, the crown prince Littler.

There are no grassrunner tribes in the nation, though there is some grassland. The local Tartious forest is home to a common elf tribe and they carefully conceal their existence. The forest is infested with demons and goblins, which are kept in check by the elves, though they provide a benefit for the elves by convincing humans that the forest is too dangerous to enter.

Ohfun

Ohfun is the capitol city of the nation of Ohfun. It's a large and bustling city with many features. The royal palace, which was originally the palace of the nation of Fahn, sits on a hilltop to the north of the city. The other notable landmarks, the Mages' Guild and Myrii temple, sit on the border of the city. Like most cities, Ohfun is protected by a siege wall.

Commerce

Ohfun is apparently landlocked, with no major rivers for ports. Trade comes entirely by road. Ohfun's market is broad and varied, with several mercantiles controlling most of the market.

Religion

Myrii is the patron god of Ohfun, mainly because there is a major Myrii temple outside the city, headed by the heroine Jenny. Young priestesses come from all across Alecrast to train here. Unlike in Lodoss, only women are trained in this temple. In Lodoss, a Myrii priest chooses the hero they will follow, but in Alecrast, the pinnacle of any Myrii priestesses' career is when she preforms the Ritual of Revelation, in which the hope is that Myrii will speak to the priestess and tell her who her champion will be. If she gains a champion, she is bound to serve and train him, then guide him to glory. It is not uncommon for priestesses to take this bond to the extreme by sharing their champion's bed.

Guilds

There is a large Mages' Guild and Academy in Ohfun, headed by Carwess. The building is quite large and populated by many students. It offers many resources for training and reference to mages. Other guilds in Ohfun are unknown.

Isles of Azarn

The Isles of Azarn are about six thousand kilometers east of Lodoss. However, the sea between Lodoss and Azarn are speckled with Islands and archipelagos, making the journey easier for merchant vessels. In fact, the Eastern Sea Mercantile has trade routes with the Isles of Azarn.

The only information on the inhabitants of Azarn comes from seamen and captains who travel there. According to them, there are five nations that make up Azarn, and some are at war. The people are exotic, dark skinned, and speak a different tongue. There are also a few grassrunner tribes on the larger islands and many monsters, giants, and ogres.
