Alignment

Alignment is a factor of personality that is often used in table-top games. It sums up the type of personality a character has in two words, and this works for an at-a-glance understanding of the character.

There are seven alignments, and two factors. Chaos versus Law and Good versus Evil. A character can fall in the middle of either of these factors, making them Neutral; neither chaotic or lawful, or good or evil.
  • Lawful Good
  • Neutral Good
  • Chaotic Good
  • True Neutral
  • Lawful Evil
  • Neutral Evil
  • Chaotic Evil

Some characters may also have "tendencies". This is most true for neutral characters. While they don't quite fit any other alignment as well as neutral, they might have a tendency to lean more to evil than good, or more lawful than chaotic, or vice verse. In rare cases, a character could have two alignments. Split personalities, or a negative influence of some sort may cause them to become a different alignment from time to time.

To determine your character's alignment, we direct you to a test on the Wizards of the Coast website (the company that owns Dungeons and Dragons). Simply take the quiz from your character's mindset and get your result. If you are unfamiliar with the definitions of each alignment, an explanation is provided with your response. If you feel that the alignment you've been given doesn't suit your character, you can choose another that suits them better. If you're familiar enough with alignments, you don't need to take the quiz.

Examples
  • Alignment: Chaotic Good
  • Alignment: True Neural with Good tendencies
  • Alignment: Neutral Good with Chaotic tendencies
  • Alignment: Chaotic Good (Split personality: Chaotic Evil)

Quotes

This field is entirely optional! You don't need to provide a quote, but it's really just there for fun. Providing a quote by your character is another way to further define personality. It can be funny or serious, so long as it provides a little insight and it's something they'd actually say. Quotes can be added to the character profile later, if they say anything particularly memorable in the game.

Points to Remember
  • Do not take quotes from other characters in games, animes, books, movies, history, songs, etc.
  • Do not mention gods or places not specific to Lodoss.
  • This is not required! Quotes may remain blank, or be added in the game.

Examples
  • Quotes: "For better or for worse, battle changes people.", "Don't just abandon yourself, don't become a man who only lives for the duty given to him.", "The reason I fight isn't to be a hero. I just want to do what I feel is right."
  • Quotes: "When you're as beautiful as I am, you don't really need to dress up!"

Theme Song

The Theme Song form will only be added to the application if you request it. Theme songs are for fun, and are apart of a group project. We have created one CD of character theme songs, and hope to be able to make another when we have enough new songs to fill a 700MB .mp3 CD.

If you come up with a song later on, post the title, artist, and lyrics on the character creation board.

Theme Song Rules
  1. The song can be from any genre of music, and in any language, but include a translation of lyrics if possible.
  2. The song does not need to be lyrical, you can choose a song that is purely instrumental.
  3. The song must be recorded. We need something that we can put on the CD.
  4. You cannot use a song that's already claimed by another character.

Song Title
  • Enter the title of the song in this field. Make sure it's the right title!
Artist
  • Enter the band or singer who preformed this song.
From
  • If the song is uniquely from a movie, TV series, or anime, please include what show it's from.
Lyrics
  • Find the lyrics to the song, then paste or type them into this field. Make sure verses and choruses are separated. If your song has no lyrics enter (Instrumental). If you don't have the lyrics, find them at one of the lyrics sites recommended below.

Examples
  • Song Title: Evermore
    Artist: Kusou Takeshi
From: Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight
    Lyrics:
Now the eldest oak tree found his voice
Said that her tribe had no other choice
She wondered why her kinsmen had no way
    But to decay
Soon the savage ones would trample down
    Her forefathers' forests for renown

An aimless journey led her all around
    And soon she found
All the warriors and a brilliant knight
In a bond of friendship so tight
Though she'd known them as a savage race
She had hope and joy in her face

In the troop of humans and an elf
She would know that only herself
    Would live a life
    Almost eternal is her life

Though she found a true friend, they would part
Though she loved a knight, her lover's heart
Would cease to beat, and she could never meet
    The one again
    She's to remain
    Just to remain
    Just to remain

Familiar or Horse Name
Name Pronunciation

Basically the same deal as character names, except for no last names, of course. If a character cares enough to keep a familiar or pet, they likely would have named it something.

Horses
Names are optional for horses, as some characters may consider a horse only a vehicle and not care to name it.

Examples
  • Name: Fluffy
    Pronunciation: FLUF-fee

Familiar/Horse Age

Please be certain of the lifespan of your chosen animal before you post. If you are unsure, do a web search. For a magical animal, consult the moderators. This is required.

Horses
On average, horses live around 20 years. However, under the best conditions, horses may live well into their thirties. The oldest horse recorded lived to be 62.

Examples
  • Age: 3
  • Age: 13

Familiar/Horse Gender

Mostly, you'll have to chose between male or female. However, in the case of male animals, neutering is an option. If your male animal is neutered, state Neutered Male. Female animals can not be spayed due to the fact that is a more invasive surgery. Neutered animals would be quite rare in animals besides horses, however.

Horses
Male horses can be neutered as well, and this is a more common practice than neutering other animals. A male horse that has been neutered is called a Gelding. Instead of stating Neutered Male, state Gelding. Gelding is practiced due to the unruly tendencies of a complete stallion, this makes them docile and easy to handle.

Examples
  • Gender: Male
  • Gender: Female
  • Gender: Neutered Male
  • Gender: Gelding

Species

This is the species of your familiar. If it is a domestic animal, you may have a Breed field as well. Don't use the scientific name for the species, just the common name.

Horses
Ponies and Donkeys will be counted as horses, not familiars.

Examples
  • Species: Falcon
  • Species: Horse
  • Species: Donkey
  • Species: Dog
  • Species: Cat

Breed

This field will only be added in the case of horses, dogs, or any species that may have breeds. Do not use specific breeds that are obviously native to Earth, like chihuahua, Doberman, or Afghan hound. You may make up breeds, or use a general type, such as hound or toy. In the case of dogs, you may want to consider the long-haired hounds that have been pictured in Nobuteru Yuuki's art.

Horses
For this RPG, we have few specific breeds and look mostly at general types for horses. However, we have created some specific breeds that can be used by players. You may come up with your own breeds as well, just provide us with a little information. Please refer to the Horses and Mounts page to see our list of breeds.

Examples

  • Species: Dog
    Breed: Hound
  • Species: Horse
    Breed: Palfrey
  • Species: Wyvern
    Breed: Domestic Mossian
  • Species: Horse
    Breed: Jaeger

Familiar Appearance

Describing familiars and horses does not need to be as in depth as characters, but it can be. Describe their size, color, and any significant features.

Horses
The least we expect is a description of their overall color. You are encouraged to include their height in hands, as well as a description of their build, conformation, and any markings (socks, blaze, etc).

Examples
  • Appearance: Fluffy is a long-haired hound of a golden chestnut color. He is tall, but his long fur swathes most of his lean body, down to his paws. He has blue eyes.
  • Appearance: Blackie is a tall, lean black saddle horse mare. Her coat is a rich black, and only marked with a white star on her forehead, and a single white sock on her hind left foot, which causes the same hoof to be pink, unlike the rest, which are black. Blackie measures 16.8hh at the withers. She is leggy and long necked, and could be considered slightly gangly. Her mane and tail are well-maintained by her owner, and kept somewhat short to keep from being distracting.
  • Appearance: Ginger is a light sorrel palfrey mare.

Magical Properties

Though this is rarely used, this field usually only appears when needed. All that needs to go here is a basic overview of any magical powers, blessings, or enchantments on the animal. This also includes magic items, such as a collar or saddle that they wear.

Examples
  • Magical Properties: Blackie wears a saddle that has a spell of quickness on it. When her rider speaks the word of invocation, Blackie can outrun the fastest race horses for about ten minutes. This spell is usually only used when they need to make a quick escape.
  • Magical Properties: The unicorn Lila can communicate with spirits and has some minor shamanist abilities. She also is empathic and can communicate with people who have Animal Empathy.

Familiar/Horse History

History can be as long or as short as necessary, and it's not even required for horses. However, it is required for familiars, even if it needs to be no longer than a few sentences.

Horses
History is not required for horses.

Examples
  • History: Fluffy was born into a litter of five. He was bred by a rich merchant who had a liking for his breed. From an early age, Fluffy proved to be an alpha male among his litter mates. When he was a year old, he was sold to another merchant, but after a few years with that master, things turned out for the worst. A gang of bandits raided his master's caravan and slew the entire group. Fluffy fought, but was badly wounded early into the fight. He laid on the side of the road, waiting for death to come, until the next morning when a party of adventurers passed by and found the wreckage. A priest of Falis was in the group and healed Fluffy, but it was the fighter of the group who kept Fluffy as his pet and companion and he has traveled with since.
  • History: Ginger was bought by her master in an Alan horse market.

Personality

This is an overview of the temperament and personality of the familiar. This doesn't need to be very long, but we need to know some basic details of how the animal acts.

Examples
  • Personality: Fluffy is a noble dog with a alpha male disposition. While he does defer to humans, he is not as eager to please as dogs of a lower rank. Among other dogs, he easily fits into the position of pack leader. He is quite calm and relaxed, but he will defend his owner and territory fiercely if threatened.
  • Personality: Ginger is calm and well-mannered.

Centaur Appearance

Height in Feet and Hands
Hands is a unit of measurement for horses (1 hand = 4 inches) and is measured from the ground, up to the withers (or shoulders—that would be the equine half's shoulder in centaurs. Since centaurs are half-horse, and not half-pony, adults must stand more than 14.2 hands at the shoulder (that's the height that distinguishes horse from pony). For reference, here are some heights of familiar breeds.
  • Arabian 14.2-15hh
  • Thoroughbred 16hh
  • Mustang 14-15hh
  • Clydesdale 16.2hh
  • Shire (largest breed) 17-18hh
(This will require some math, and if you don't feel you can do it or don't want to, leave the Height (Feet) blank a moderator will figure it out for you!) To figure out a centaur's height in feet, first determine their height in hands to the withers. 4 x the height in hands will give you the inches. For example 4 x 17 = 68. Divide the height in inches by 12. Our example is 68” = 5.6'. Add the 2.5-3 feet of torso and head you centaur has and there's your full height. So, say our example centaur has a 3 feet tall human half—5.6+3=8.6. To deal with that decimal, divide it by 12 (.6/12=7). Our example centaur is then 8'7”.

Weight
The weight of your centaur should be around the same weight as a horse of the same height would be. Their human half may only weigh around the same or a little more than the horse's neck and head would. The average weights for the breeds we used as examples in height are:
  • Arabian 850-1100lbs
  • Thoroughbred 1000-1300lbs
  • Mustang 850-1100lbs
  • Clydesdale 1700-2200lbs
  • Shire 1900-2400lbs

Humanoid and Equine Build
For the humanoid half, use the same terms you would for a normal person. However, since centaurs are related to elves, they aren't fat. They will mostly be slim, and sometimes muscular. As for the equine half, saying either light, medium, or heavy will suffice.

Tail Color
A centaur's tail will usually match hair color, but sometimes it might be a little different.

Coat Color
This is the color of fur on their equine body. Any horse color is acceptable. See our Horses and Mounts page for a list of colors.

Abilities (Formerly Magic Abilities and Physical Prowess)

This field is for you to describe any magical, physical, spiritual, or mental abilities of your character. If you do not feel as if your character needs their abilities described (for example, if they are average for their class), leave blank. If you do fill this out, please be thorough! Especially if your character has a unique ability. At least three sentences if you chose to fill this out.

Writing Requirements
  • At least three sentences.
  • Present tense.

Example
  • Abilities: Deedlit was trained from early childhood like all elves. As a high elf, she is limited by her culture's taboos and refuses to summon spirits such as Salamander and Dark Fairies. She usually limits herself to Sylph, Undine, Will o' Wisps, and a few other spirits, all of which she is very adept with. She witnessed the rebirth of Phoenix, the Fire Queen, and that is the only fire elemental she'll summon. In the year 512, Deedlit made a contract with Djinn, also known as Aruku.

Deedlit is slightly stronger than the average female elf, but her endurance is lower than average. Her best physical virtue is her agility, and she is a graceful woman. As a swordswoman, she relies on a combination of her strength and agility.
